We had a great short week with a celebration for Mickey's Birthday! We also have quite a few fun weeks ahead of us! Holiday Hope Shopping, the Wrapping Party and our Christmas Program are all in the upcoming weeks. The students and I are VERY excited for these fun events!
Have a wonderful week,
Mrs. Haagsma
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- What is a variable (in Math)?
- What is scarcity? What happens to the price of a good if it is scarce? (hint-think of the raccoon fishing game)
- What happened to Wallace Wallis in your mystery Shared Reading book? Was he really kidnapped?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: Students will be editing and revising their Persuasive Essays this week during Writing Workshop. We should be ready for our next Writing Celebration on Friday!
Math: Writing our own multiplication and division word problems, using variables and multiplying with multiples of 10 (example-70 x 6) will be our learning targets for this week. Thank you for practicing your child's facts with them each week, it makes a HUGE difference in their math/number sense!
***Please encourage your child to practice memorizing their flashcards. It is essential that they have their facts memorized each week for their flashcard test on Fridays. They will have one minute to answer 20 questions so they must be fluent with their facts. Each time they past a set of facts; they will add another set. For example: the first test will cover just x5 facts, but the next test will cover Division 5s, then x5 and x 2 facts, etc...Please let me know if you have questions about our flashcards!
Social Studies: Last week, we continued learning about Economics. We learned terms such as scarcity, opportunity cost and trade. This week we will get a chance to create our own small businesses, by creating goods to sell. This is called an Economics Marketplace and is an activity sure to be loved by all students!
Reading Workshop: We finished our first mystery read aloud (which is from a new favorite series called A to Z mysteries) and now moved into our next mystery called, The Diamond Mystery. Our goals while reading mysteries are to slow down while reading, read for meaning and clues, as well as making predictions about our books.
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
