Thank you for all of your help with our PostCard Challenge! Keep them coming! The kids are LOVING reading our postcards each day and we are having so much fun coloring in our map! We have quite a few postcards so far and we have a bunch that we are going to look at next week as well. Please continue to ask friends and family if they would like to send a postcard; we love getting mail each day.
Attention:Mrs. Haagsma

Hudsonville, MI 49426
Looking for a place to get rid of all of that extra Halloween candy/treats/trinkets that will be coming home this weekend and next week? I will gladly take some for our classroom store! I am always looking for donations of items that may need a home. I will happily accept candy, used toys/books, and other trinkets. Thank you!
Questions to ask your child about 3rd Grade this week:
What is inferring? What activity did you do with Mrs. Haagsma during reading time to practice this?
Tell me about the cover of your Personal Narrative story...
What is a strategy (other than drawing a picture) you could use for figuring out multiplication problems that you do not have memorized?
What does types of things Mrs. Haagsma have you write on the board each morning?
Curriculum Updates
Writing- We are almost finished publishing our Personal Narratives and will be celebrating them next week! The students can not wait to share them with the class. They worked very hard and their covers turned out amazing!
Math- We moved into Unit 2 in Math Workshop this week. Unit 2 covers one and two step story problems, multiplication and division strategies, and solving problems with multiples of 10. We spent some time talking about how to be respectful and responsible during Math Workshop as well. Students rotate between 3 stations;
- Meeting with Mrs. Haagsma for a lesson
- Working on problems in a group/independently
- Practicing our skills with an activity, technology, or a group game.
Science- Animal adaptations will continue to be our focus this week. We explored the ways that animals adapt to best survive in their environment by looking at different types of animals and thinking about their characteristics. Examples of animal adaptations are camouflage, sharp teeth, good hearing, claws, etc.
Reading- This week, we learned about making inferences. We used our background knowledge, plus clues in our text to make inferences about characters, settings, feelings, or actions. We practiced by exploring Mrs. Haagsma's bag to make inferences about her and then we moved onto a new read aloud book, Frindle.
An example of an inference:
Mrs. Haagsma had a Barnes and Noble gift card in her wallet
Inference-she must love reading, it might have been her birthday recently, she must love getting new books, someone loves her and got her a special gift.
Inferences help students think more deeply about the text.
Upcoming Dates:
Oct. 31 Halloween Party/Parade
- Please plan on your child bringing their "school appropriate" costume to school (no blood, weapons, scary masks, etc...)
- Parade: If weather permits, we will be walking to the Laurels for our Halloween parade on the 31st. We will leave school around 1:00, walk down Park Ave. to Van Buren. We will take a right on to Van Buren down to 36th. Then will turn right on 36th Ave walking toward Curtis. Turn right onto Curtis which will take us back to school. If you are interested in attending our parade we are asking parents to line the parade route rather than going in through the Laurels with us, as there is limited space. If it does rain we will not be having an indoor parade. Teachers will have a rain plan for their individual classes.
Party: Our class party will be held from 2:40-3:40. We'll enjoy treats and fun Halloween games!
Nov. 3 Body Safety Presentation 1:40-2:30
- Please let me know if you would like to attend
