Science-We love our unit on Light! We completed an interesting experiment on heat energy from sunlight this week. We covered two mason jars with paper; one with white and the other with black. Then we filled the jars with equal amounts of water of the same temperature. We placed the jars outside for about 2 hours. Once 2 hours had passed; we tested the water temperature of both jars. The jar covered with black paper was 6 degrees warmer than the water in the jar covered in white paper! Black colored items absorb more heat than white or light covered items. White colors reflect most of the heat from the sunlight instead of absorbing it.
Writing-Amazing writing has been happening in our room over the past week! We are learning all about Realistic Fiction Writing and the traits this type of writing processes. In order for us to practice we need to continually gather entries in our journals. The students are given writing prompts and must complete a short realistic fiction story in 10 minutes. We return to the rug and share and then are given another writing prompt. It's interesting to see how students take the prompts and make them so unique! Examples of prompts include; being lost, getting sick and missing a special event, getting stuck on a ride, etc... Next week we will chose a character, setting, and problem and begin drafting a piece to bring through the writing process.
Reading-We are currently learning about Biographies during Shared Reading. A biography is the story of someone's life, written by another person. The biography that we are reading currently is called Helen Keller-A photographic biography. The students are amazed by the courage and strength of this girl who overcame such large obstacles to become successful.

Penny Battle-
Beginning next week Monday and going through April 1, we will be having an all school penny battle. Students may bring in any change (or dollars!). We will put the pennies in our 3rd Grade container and any other money will go in other class’ container. This money will count against the class’ total. Pennies are counted positive and “non” pennies are counted toward the negative. All money that is raised will go toward the “All for Books” campaign. This buys books for students within our school.
