As a reminder, this week we will start our M-Step testing. The students have worked hard and are ready to do their best. Please make sure students are well rested and have breakfast as it will help them be at their best. We will be testing English Language Arts (Reading and Writing) on Tuesday and Wednesday. The math portion will be given the following week.
And the big news....MRS. HAAGSMA RETURNS! Mrs. Haagsma will be back beginning next Friday for the remainder of the year. Thank you for the pleasure of working with your students these past few months. It has been a joy to get to know them, share in their daily lives and celebrate their learning. As parents, you should be proud!
Have a great weekend,
Mrs. Davis
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this past week:
*What is your group research topic? What subtopic is your responsibility?
*What legacy did your Wax Museum character leave?
*How can you decide if this equation is true or false without computing the answer? 24 x 8=12 x 16
*Who is our State Representative?
*Round 1, 563 to the nearest hundred.
Please write a note in your child's agenda noting that you asked them these questions and they can earn an extra Michigan Dollar!
Curriculum Updates
Writing: Students should have all notes complete for their Biographies. If students were not finished with notes in class, they were brought home to complete this weekend. Monday we will start our drafting process.
Math: We completed our Unit 6 and had our unit test on Thursday. We will be starting a new unit focused on Word Problems this next week. In addition, we will be reviewing many of the concepts we have learned earlier this year.
Social Studies: This week we started our study about Government with discussions about the level of government as well as the branches of government. Our main focus is on Michigan government. We discussed senators, representatives and why representative government is important.
Reading Workshop: Students began reading and taking notes in their Information Book Clubs this week. They surveyed the texts to come up with subtopics, then divided the subtopics among the group members. Each student is working to become an expert on their subtopic.
Word Study: This week we focused on "power words" or words that tell us what to do when we are answering a question. Students not only defined the words, but did word sorts to group words by similarities. Recognizing these power words will strengthen our reading and writing.
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
