Thank you to all of the parents who helped, donated, and took pictures!
What a great day we had! The students enjoyed a fun filled day packed with activities like "Monster Mash Dance Off", Animal BINGO, Halloween Math packets, a parade to The Laurels, and finally our party! Thank you to all of the parents who helped, donated, and took pictures! Awesome Costumes! We loved our Bubble Gum Blowing Contest! Some adults even got involved; including Mrs. Haagsma! I dressed up as Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus. I even carried Liz around on my shoulder all day!
Wow! What a great day we had today! The whole school sported their "Be The One" t-shirts and we were all in high spirits. "Be The One" is our Park School Theme this year. Being the one involves going out of your way to "be the one" who is loyal, respectful, kind, a good listener, a hard worker, etc... Our school theme is based upon the book One by Kathryn Otoshi. The book's message is that every person has the chance to change the world around them.
Here are a few pictures of us in our new shirts! Every grade has a different color! Learning all about the parts of a plant and diving into their functions is fun in 3rd grade! This week we dissected kidney beans (seeds) and learned how plants begin.
We also learned about the function of a plant stem by using water, celery and food coloring. By soaking stalks of celery overnight in cups of colored water, we were able to create different colored celery! We then cut open the celery to expose the transport tubes inside. These transport tubes carry water from the roots of plants to the leaves, thus the function of the stem! By using food coloring, we were able to easily view the individual tubes. Here are a few pictures of the students dissecting our celery and looking for transport tubes.
Most students have been coming home with a baggie clipped in their agenda of 10 flashcards or "Snap Math flashcards". (if your child has not, they will receive them this week) These cards include 3 "unknown" facts and 7 "known" facts. The students were tested on all facts and have their own personal group of "unknowns" and "knowns". Please have your child practice their 10 cards e a little each night in order to begin memorization. On Tuesdays, your child will be tested and if they know them all "in a snap", they will receive their new facts for the week. Their 3 "unknown" facts from the previous week will now become "knowns" and they will receive 4 more "knowns" and 3 new "unknowns"-thus making 10 total cards.
Spelling will also begin this week with each student receiving a list of their own personal words to work on. These will also be clipped in their agendas. The students were each tested on the most commonly used words in 3rd-8th grade in order to make their personalized list. Each student will have 8 "unknown" words and 2 "known" words. Spelling words will be tested on Thursdays. Please let me know if you have questions or concerns! |
