We are back in the swing of things after returning from spring break! As we enter these last couple months of school, our class will be busy working on many skills and concepts throughout the end of the year. Our 3rd graders will be taking the M-Step test the end of this month. Please try to plan to be in attendance all day on these days and schedule appointments around these dates. 3rd grade is scheduled to take the tests on Tuesday, April 30 and Wednesday, May 1 as well as Tuesday, May 7 and Wednesday, May 8. If a student is ill, please do not send them to school, we will schedule a make up in that case.
As a reminder, this Thursday, April 18, we will be holding our family book club night. If you have not turned in your RSVP, there is still time. Please let me know no later than Wednesday, April 17, if you will be attending. The book for this book club is Word of Mouse by James Patterson.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Mrs. Davis
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this past week:
*How do you round 3,465 to the hundreds?
*What is the area of a rectangle with a length of 12 units and a perimeter of 56 units?
*What is your opinion on the best way to make up extra snow days (based on the law and options we studied in class this week)? What are the benefits of making the snow days up this way?
*Who are you going to be for the Wax Museum?
Please write a note in your child's agenda noting that you asked them these questions and they can earn an extra Michigan Dollar!
Curriculum Updates
Writing: Our writing is combined with Social Studies. This week we read an article and discussed ways that snow days could be made up based on the Michigan State Laws. We also created a T-chart and students discussed the pros and cons of each make up option. Next week, students will be writing a letter to the governor stating their opinion as well as evidence as to why it is the best option for the snow day makeup.
Math: We continued our area and perimeter studies this week. In addition, we are now starting to learn about naming shapes based on their sides. This portion of our unit has an extensive amount of vocabulary. We will be creating flash cards to help us become experts with these terms. For our morning we work, we are concentrating on just a few addition and/or subtraction problems each day and then practicing a new concept. This week, we learned about rounding numbers to the tens, hundreds or thousands.
Social Studies: We will finish our opinion study on a Michigan policy by constructing a letter to the governor. Our next unit will begin studying the structure of government.
Reading Workshop: We are starting our unit on narrative non-fiction and reading our biographies. Students are very excited about our culminating celebration with the Wax Museum at the end of the year. Currently, all students have selected their person of interest and next week we will begin collecting our information.
Word Study: We will be working on our math vocabulary in place of spelling.
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
