Reading Workshop
Reading workshop within Mrs. Haagsma's classroom consists of of many different parts!
Reading Journals
Reading journals are an important part of Reading Workshop! Each of the students (and Mrs. Haagsma) have our own journals. We use these journals for many different things. The students record their reading logs, journal entries and responses to books that we are reading, take notes, and many other important ideas in them! The journals have three sections.
1. Reading Logs-recording what books we are reading and the genre
2. Shared Reading Responses-taking classroom notes on our Shared Reading books, responding to them, or creating journal entries
3. My Reading Responses-responding to the books that we are reading by ourselves.
- Shared reading-Reading a text together as a class, working on different reading strategies that help the students to become better readers.
- Individualized Reading time- Reading a "Good Fit" book on their own, the students silently reading around the room.
- Conferring-Mrs. Haagsma confers with students individually on their own book to work on reading strategies.
- Strategy Groups-Mrs. Haagsma confers with a small group of students to work on reading strategies. The students are all working on the same strategy, but each have their own book.

Here is an example of a student's Reading Journal. We work hard to personalize them and treat them like gold; they are essential to us!
We create our inside cover to reflect our Reading Life and the graph is used to track our reading stamina at the beginning of the school year.
