I hope that you had a relaxing weekend! We are looking forward to another fun week with an Art Prize field trip and the football game on Friday!
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- What is your favorite thing about Math Workshop time?
- How can you help other students? At recess? In the classroom?
- Can you explain the 9s trick?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: We are wrapping up our first Personal Narrative Discovery Draft. The goal of this draft is to apply all of the lessons and strategies we have learned so far in writing. The students are currently working in pairs to edit and revise this draft.
Math: Last week we moved into introducing division and learned the counting up strategy to solve division problems with the 5s. We also took a quiz on Friday.
***Please encourage your child to practice memorizing their flashcards. It is essential that they have their facts memorized each week for their flashcard test on Fridays. They will have one minute to answer 20 questions so they must be fluent with their facts. Each time they past a set of facts; they will add another set. For example: the first test will cover just x5 facts, but the next test will cover Division 5s, then x5 and x 2 facts, etc...Please let me know if you have questions about our flashcards!
Reading Workshop: Our Reading Workshop's focus is working on comprehension (understanding the text). Asking questions regarding the setting and characters help us to think deeply about what we are reading.
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
