Our week just flew by in 3rd grade! We had a wonderful week of learning, even with the hot weather! Please continue to send water bottles with your child as the weather stays hot during the beginning part of this week.
Please check out our blog for updates and snapshots of our classroom! Have a wonderful week!
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- Can you tell me one of the types of Writing Grabber Leads you discussed last week?
- Can you give an example of a Lead that is not a Grabber Lead?
- Can you tell me who your reading partner will be? What did you learn about them?
- Can you summarize our read aloud, Pathki Nana, in only 3 sentences?
- What did you buy at your classroom store?
- Can you name three states that you received postcards from? Do you know their capitals?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: Our goal this week in Writing was to work on writing Grabber Leads. These are leads that grab our attention as readers and make us WANT to keep reading. We learned about Question leads, Onomatopoeia leads (sound words-Zoom! Ouch! Crash) and 5 sense leads (using the senses to describe-I smelled the butter popcorn and fried food as I walked into the crowded, dusty fair grounds.)
Social Studies: We reviewed the Human and Natural Characteristics of a community as we discussed the geography of Hudsonville last week. We also LOVED getting postcards! Thank you for supporting our project! We are having so much fun!
Math: We learned a variety of strategies for solving multiplication problems and now we will be moving into division and Math Workshop groups! ***Your child began to bring home x5 flashcards last week and they will receive /5 this week, our first test will be this Friday and every Friday after that. They will have one minute to answer 20 multiplication problems and then one minute to answer 20 division problems. Both multiplication and division flashcards will be given together to help students make the connection between the fact families. Please encourage your child to practice memorizing their flashcards. It is essential that they have their facts memorized each week for their flashcard test on Fridays. Each time they past a set of facts; they will add another set. For example: the first test will cover just x5 and /5 facts, but the next test will cover x5 and x2, /5 and /2.
Reading Workshop: We were matched up with a Reading Partner this week and will begin to meet with them frequently to check in with books, discuss what we are reading and hold each other accountable. We will spend more time this week to get to know our partners better and to learn about their strengths! Please encourage your child to remember their book every day. This is so important to help build fluency, comprehension and confidence. By reading the same book at school and home, students can greatly increase their reading skills!
