A couple of great highlights that I want to share with you from last week; EVERY student has turned in their homework on time for the last 5 weeks! Wow! I will bring in an extra special treat for them this week to reward them. I also had EVERY child pass their flashcard test this week as well! Thank you for modeling the importance of school with encouraging your child to complete their homework, reading and to practice their flashcards. Your support is very important to the success of your child. THANK YOU!
Our pictures from this week show our Halloween Math Challenge; Unlock the Haunted House and a fun art project creating Frankenstein's Monster!
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- Can you retell the first chapter in The Absent Author?
- What is a "Math Talk"? Can you tell me the steps of a Math Talk?
- What does the word, persuasive, mean? How are you going to use that in your new writing unit?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: Our new unit is called Persuasive Essays. The students will pick a topic that they feel strongly about, create a thesis statement and brainstorm three reasons of support for their thesis.
Math: We are moving into our next unit in Math! This unit will move into 2 step story problems, area word problems and more multiplication and division practice.
***Please encourage your child to practice memorizing their flashcards. It is essential that they have their facts memorized each week for their flashcard test on Fridays. They will have one minute to answer 20 questions so they must be fluent with their facts. Each time they past a set of facts; they will add another set. For example: the first test will cover just x5 facts, but the next test will cover Division 5s, then x5 and x 2 facts, etc...Please let me know if you have questions about our flashcards!
Reading Workshop: Our new reading unit is an exciting one...MYSTERIES! Your child may have begun reading a new mystery book or may start one this week once they finish their current book. This unit is sure to be a favorite among 3rd graders!
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!

Upcoming Dates
Oct. 31 Halloween Parade 9:20am and Parties in the afternoon. 3rd Grade party starts at the end of recess-2:05-3:00pm.
Park Families,
In our efforts to best partner with the Laurels Nursing Home, we are going to try a new start time for our annual Halloween Parade. We will leave Park at 9:20am and parade down VanBuren, through the Laurels, and back to school by coming up Curtis. Please have your child dressed (or mostly dressed) for the parade when he/she arrives at school that morning. (The Director of the ECC is aware of our morning parade plans and understands Park students may arrive for before school childcare in costume.) Please only send your child to school in school appropriate costumes (specifically, no weapons or anything that might scare little ones). The parade will be canceled if the weather does not cooperate. Our 3rd grade party will start after recess (2:05-3:00)
I will provide the activities/games and some small prizes for the students, it is always a great party! If you plan to attend the party, please be sure to fill out a background check.
