Congratulations to all of the 3rd grade students on their hard work in preparation for our writing celebration yesterday. Students spent many hours in class (and some at home!) working to publish their informational text. We had a wonderful time sharing our work with you yesterday. Thank you to those who was able to attend and encourage these students. Everyone should be very proud of this work.
This week dive into our new units. Part of this includes our new read aloud, Because of Winn-Dixie. Please remind students to read at home each night as this continues to build our skills as strong readers.
Have a wonderful week,
Mrs. Davis
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this past week:
- What is a unit fraction?
- What chapter book are you reading independently?
- What character trait does the main character seem to portray in your independent book?
- Who is Winn-Dixie?
- What was your goal last week and did you complete it?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: Congratulations again to students on their hard work this week completing their informational writing. Students took their work seriously and really put forth their best effort. We will now be starting our character unit which will include a literary essay.
Math: Our unit 3 test is complete and we are moving on to fractions. We will be learning how a fraction is formed, adding fractions, putting fractions on a number line as well as drawing fraction models.
***Please remember to continue to practice their flashcards. Repeated practice helps with both accuracy and speed.
Social Studies: This week we will continue to study the European explorers. We will include a study on Father Marquette and his contributions.
Reading Workshop: We will be starting our unit focused on character studies. Students need to be reading a chapter book at their level to coincide with this unit.
Word Study: We have started studying words, their sounds and ways they can be grouped or sorted as part of our morning work. On Friday's, students will have a spelling test over the word list from that week. In an effort to help increase understanding and fluency in sound patterns and word groups, I will send an additional spelling list home on Mondays. Students are welcome to practice their spelling words at home (being quizzed by a parent or sibling is a great way to practice!).
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
