We worked hard last week on reviewing rules and procedures, as well as Elapsed time and Main Idea! Both of these are tricky concepts, but the students are progressing in their knowledge! Please look for a note regarding my maternity leave in your child's mail tomorrow.
Have a wonderful week,
Mrs. Haagsma
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- How did Pathki escape from Cut Ears? What are some of the strong survival techniques that she uses to live on her own in the forest?
- Why did Native Americans build their villages near water sources?
- If the play started at 2:30 and ended 2 hours and 25 minutes later, what time did it end?
- Why did Mrs. Haagsma give you 5 seconds to try to memorize 9 different pictures during Reading Workshop? What did you learn about remembering information?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: Our new unit called "The Art of Informational Writing" is extending our knowledge of writing informational texts. The students are currently creating main idea (topic) sentences to introduce each of their chapters, as well as developing key details to support those sentences.
Math: Elapsed time is our current learning target in Math. This standard can be tricky to understand, but we are working hard to practice start and end times of activities.
***Please encourage your child to practice memorizing their flashcards. It is essential that they have their facts memorized each week for their flashcard test on Fridays. They will have one minute to answer 20 questions so they must be fluent with their facts. Each time they past a set of facts; they will add another set. For example: the first test will cover just x5 facts, but the next test will cover Division 5s, then x5 and x 2 facts, etc...Please let me know if you have questions about our flashcards! We will finish our Friday Mad Minute tests by the end of Jan.
Social Studies: We spent last week learning about the first Native American Tribes to live in Michigan and how they survived-our current read aloud (Pathki Nana) give us a glimpse into these survival techniques! Next, we will learn about the first Europeans who came to Michigan, the French Fur traders.
Reading Workshop: Our new Reading unit ties in with our Writing unit! All about Non-fiction! The students are encouraged to read non-fiction for at least part of our reading time in order to practice some of the skills being introduced, but they can still continue to read fiction/chapter books at home.
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
