We had a great week in 3rd grade and wrapped up with a fun experiment called "Egg Drop". The students had about 45 minutes to plan and design a structure that would protect an egg to be dropped from about 10 feet. The groups worked hard and had a wonderful time testing our structures! Ask your child about their design! They were very creative, using items like socks, bubble wrap, boxes, tissues, toilet paper and more!
We focused on the word "kindness" this week. We learned about how we can build each other up during our assembly and worked in class on strategies to be a leader. A wonderful book called, That Rule Doesn't Apply to Me!, was our guide as we discussed following rules and how to show kindness to others. This will be our focus the rest of the school year!
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this past week:
*What is the capital of Michigan, Florida and Maine? Think of the Tour the States song!
*Can you summarize the book How to Steal a Dog?
*How can you be a leader in our classroom?
*What is the difference between tattling and reporting?
Please write a note in your child's agenda noting that you asked them these questions and they can earn an extra Michigan Dollar!
Curriculum Updates
Writing: We are currently drafting our Early Life section of our Wax Museum project. I am really impressed with the quality of writing happening in our classroom! I can't wait to see the final projects with the Wax Museum!
Math: We have started a new unit focused on one and two step word problems. A quick quiz will go home this week covering one step problems. Students are also grouped according to concepts that they need extra practice in for some review. I will be retesting all standards before the end of the school year!
Social Studies: We will continue our study about Government with discussions about the level of government as well as the branches of government. Our main focus is on Michigan government.
Reading Workshop: Students finished reading and taking notes in their Information Book Clubs. They surveyed the texts to come up with subtopics, then divided the subtopics among the group members. Each student is an expert on their subtopic. We are currently working on mini-posters to present our findings!
Word Study: *We will jump back into Word Study this week!
Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
