We will be taking the M-Step this week Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The 3rd graders are tested on ELA and Math. Please be sure that your child has a good night sleep the night before and has a good breakfast on those days. Your child may be a bit nervous, but they are well prepared for online testing from our practice on Moby Max and Study Island over the course of the school year!
I am looking forward to our field trip to the Grand Rapids Public Museum coming up on Wednesday, May 16! Please send in all field trip money by Friday, May 4. (The museum has a new policy of paying in advance to reserve your spot)
Have a great week,
Mrs. Haagsma
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- How do you know what ten to round a number to?
- What is something you can do to help others this week?
- Can you share something good that happened last week at school?
- What is your group creating for your business? What struggles have you encountered with building a business?
- How are you feeling about taking the M-Step this week? How can you do your best?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: We are wrapping up an Opinion piece this week and will move into reading and researching our biographies next! This is our last unit and will take us to the end of the school year.
Grammar topics were covered during Super Switch time by Mrs. Van for the first half of the school year and are now reviewed daily during our morning work.
Social Studies: The students are working in a small group on a business. They were given a loan and used their money to purchase materials, rent a space and buy an ad. This project is an exciting way to put our learning into practice!
Math: We covered rounding to the nearest ten and hundred last week. We are also reviewing addition and subtraction, as well as jumping into 3 digit addition and subtraction. This concept is one students have experience with, yet need extra practice with subtraction across zeros, as well as with borrowing (ungrouping).
We review previous topics twice a week as a whole class and small groups are pulled during Computer/Intervention time when extra support is needed.
Reading Workshop: Our new Shared Reading read-aloud is a book called "Naya Nuki". This is a historical fiction story of a young girl who learns how to survive despite many odds stacked against her.
Our focus during Reading Workshop continues to cover reading non-fiction and fiction texts for understanding, main idea and details. Close reading helps readers dive deeper into their texts! We are also working on creating reading responses to our reading by citing the text.
MobyMax and Study Island: These are two great learning sites that Park students have access to (Thank you Parents' Club!) We spend time each week extending and practicing our skills in the subjects of Math and Reading on these sites. Computer skills are an essential part of our learning!
Epic! is another site that your child may want to explore. This is a wonderful site full of over 20,000 books. Your child can get on for free Monday-Friday during school hours. This is perfect for a Snow Day or during our breaks.
