I hope you had a chance to enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend! We have one more week of school to prepare for our M-Step test next week. We will be taking the M-Step May 1-3. The 3rd graders are tested on ELA and Math. Please be sure that your child has a good night sleep the night before and has a good breakfast on those days.
Have a great week,
Mrs. Haagsma
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- How do you know what hundred to round a number to?
- What is something you can do to help others this week?
- Can you share something good that happened last week at school?
- What does the Economic's word "Opportunity Cost" mean?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: We are currently drafting an Opinion piece, with an emphasis on our learning about how to care for The Earth. We will use the knowledge we learned to help us compose an essay based upon how we can help our Earth.
Grammar topics were covered during Super Switch time by Mrs. Van for the first half of the school year and are now reviewed daily during our morning work.
Social Studies: We moved into a unit on Economics last week. As we learn about businesses in Michigan, the students will brainstorm a business of their own to create with a small group. This project is an exciting way to put our learning into practice!
Math: We moved into a unit covering 3 digit addition, 3 digit subtraction, rounding and place value last week. We will continue to build upon the skills learned in 2nd grade on 2 digit addition and subtraction.
We review previous topics twice a week as a whole class and small groups are pulled during Computer/Intervention time when extra support is needed.
Reading Workshop: Our new Shared Reading read-aloud is a book called "Naya Nuki". This is a historical fiction story of a young girl who learns how to survive despite many odds stacked against her.
Our focus during Reading Workshop continues to cover reading non-fiction and fiction texts for understanding, main idea and details. Close reading helps readers dive deeper into their texts! We are also working on creating reading responses to our reading by citing the text.
MobyMax and Study Island: These are two great learning sites that Park students have access to (Thank you Parents' Club!) We spend time each week extending and practicing our skills in the subjects of Math and Reading on these sites. Computer skills are an essential part of our learning!
Epic! is another site that your child may want to explore. This is a wonderful site full of over 20,000 books. Your child can get on for free Monday-Friday during school hours. This is perfect for a Snow Day or during our breaks.
