Dear Families,
Now that we have officially "Sprung" ahead, hopefully we are near the end of winter and there will be no more weather interruptions to our learning! Congratulations to everyone who took the "Snow Day Learning Challenge". Students earned donuts Friday because of their hard work!
Conference notes were sent home last Monday. Conferences will be held March 19 and 21. If you haven't had chance yet, please send back your conference form. This is a great chance to stock your summer reading for home!
Have a wonderful week,
Mrs. Davis
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this past week:
- Starting with 2/3, can you write an Equivalence Chain?
- If I have a cake and eat 2/8 of it and you have a cake and eat 2/5 of it, who ate more?
- Who is Gloria Dump? What is the role of her character in Because of Winn-Dixie (why is Gloria Dump a character in the story)?
- Who were the colonists? What did they call the British soldiers?
- What book are you reading for our class Book Club?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: We are continuing our Literary Essay based on Because of Winn-Dixie. Students are working to craft their evidence paragraphs based on the character and trait they have chosen. We will be working towards starting our final drafts this week.
Math: We are continuing our Fraction unit and will have a test on Thursday this week. Students have worked to understand what a fraction is, how to put fractions on a number line, comparing fractions, making equivalence chains and we will finish up with story problems this week. We also will be switching our math intervention groups and students will be focusing on strengthening another concept.
Social Studies: We started learning about the American Revolution this week. Students are engaged learning about the problems the colonists faced and how they became unhappy with Great Britain.
Reading Workshop: We are continuing to study characters through our read aloud, Because of Winn-Dixie. This week, students will start their class book clubs. Each student is in a small group. The group members will read individually, then come together to discuss the books, characters and story lines. This is always a fun unit for students!
Word Study: We are continuing studying words, their sounds, and ways they can be grouped or sorted as part of our morning work. On Friday's, students will have a spelling test over the word list from that week. In an effort to help increase understanding and fluency in sound patterns and word groups, I will send an additional spelling list home on Mondays. Students are welcome to practice their spelling words at home (being quizzed by a parent or sibling is a great way to practice!).
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
