Weekly Update 3/3/192/23/2019
Dear Families,
This week was a great week of learning. We're enjoying reading Winn-Dixie and have started a new literary essay. We also started our new math unit on fractions as well as a fun "superswitch" math time each day. This week we will be celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday with special attire each day.
Conference notes will be coming home tomorrow. Conferences will be held March 19 and 21. As a reminder, Friday is an early release day. Students will be dismissed at 12:15 P.M. Next weekend is also time change-the clocks "spring" forward.
Have a wonderful week,
Mrs. Davis
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this past week:
- What if you put 5/3 on a number line, how would you decide where is goes? What does the 5 stand for? What about the 3?
- What character and character trait are you writing about in your essay? How does your character show that character trait?
- What are you doing in your math group (the superswitch groups)?
- Who was Father Marquette?

Writing: We have started our Literary Essay based on Because of Winn-Dixie. Students are choosing a character and writing an essay on the character trait they believe the character demonstrates throughout the book.
Math: We have started our unit learning about fractions. This week we will be learning about equivalent fractions. We also started smaller groups during our math "superswitch"time in the afternoon.
Social Studies: We finished our reading on Father Marquette and also did a study on his life. Students enjoyed learning about this important explorer.
Reading Workshop: Because of Winn-Dixie lends itself well to both our writing and our reading unit. We have learned how to choose and find evidence to prove our characters show a specific trait. Now, we are continuing to probe deeper into our stories and ask why a specific character acts a certain way.
Word Study: We are continuing studying words, their sounds, and ways they can be grouped or sorted as part of our morning work. On Friday's, students will have a spelling test over the word list from that week. In an effort to help increase understanding and fluency in sound patterns and word groups, I will send an additional spelling list home on Mondays. Students are welcome to practice their spelling words at home (being quizzed by a parent or sibling is a great way to practice!).
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
