This week will be spent wrapping up our Writing and Math units, as well as working on our Economics Marketplace! Friday night is our Holiday Hope Shopping event at Target at 6pm. A note will go home tomorrow with some more information about this event.
Have a wonderful week,
Mrs. Haagsma
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- How can you solve 20 x 4? What can you do with the zero?
- What is your favorite Christmas program song?
- What product did you create for your Economics Marketplace? Who is in your group? How are you budgeting your money?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: Due to the snow day, we had to push back our Writing Celebration. We should be ready for our next Writing Celebration on Tuesday! We will be celebrating our Persuasive Essays (Opinion Pieces).
Math: We worked on solving 2 step multiplication and division word problems and multiplying with multiples of 10 (example-70 x 6) last week. We should be ready for our next unit test this Friday! Thank you for practicing your child's facts with them each week, it makes a HUGE difference in their math/number sense!
***Please encourage your child to practice memorizing their flashcards. It is essential that they have their facts memorized each week for their flashcard test on Fridays. They will have one minute to answer 20 questions so they must be fluent with their facts. Each time they past a set of facts; they will add another set. For example: the first test will cover just x5 facts, but the next test will cover Division 5s, then x5 and x 2 facts, etc...Please let me know if you have questions about our flashcards!
Social Studies: This week the students had the chance to begin creating their own small businesses, by producing goods to sell. This is called an Economics Marketplace. Each group was loaned money from the bank in order to purchase resources to create their goods/products. They have to keep track of their purchases and budget their money. The students will also rent a space in our classroom and sell their products to other teachers and their peers. After we finish the project, groups will need to repay the bank (with interest!) and we will discuss terms such as scarcity, supply and demand and businesses being "in the red".
Reading Workshop: Our goals while reading mysteries are to slow down while reading, read for meaning and clues, as well as making predictions about our books.
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
