Thank you for the AMAZING donations for our Holiday Hope family! I loved shopping at Target with those who could make it and wrapping with all of the students! Thank you for helping to make Christmas special for this family! I know it will be a wonderful holiday for them.
I have an exciting week planned in 3rd grade! Our Economic Marketplace selling day, Michigan Money Store, Spirit Week and Polar Express Day on Friday. We will also enjoy some fun Christmas activities!
Have a wonderful week,
Mrs. Haagsma
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- How did your Economics Marketplace group come up with a price for your product?
- What spirit day are you looking forward to the most?
- What is a pronoun? A verb?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: We wrapped up our Opinion Unit by "writing a letter to Grumpy Cat" trying to convince him that Christmas is the best holiday. The students used all of their knowledge of Persuasive Essays and applied it into their pieces.
Math: We were tested last week over Unit 2, students were tested on one and two step story problems, multiplying by multiples of tens and using strategies to solve multiplication and division problems. These will come home this week and we will begin our next unit upon returning from Christmas break.
***Please encourage your child to practice memorizing their flashcards. It is essential that they have their facts memorized each week for their flashcard test on Fridays. They will have one minute to answer 20 questions so they must be fluent with their facts. Each time they past a set of facts; they will add another set. For example: the first test will cover just x5 facts, but the next test will cover Division 5s, then x5 and x 2 facts, etc...Please let me know if you have questions about our flashcards!
Social Studies: This week the students will be selling their products to their peers at our Economics Marketplace. Each group was loaned money from the bank in order to purchase resources to create their goods/products. They had to keep track of their purchases and budget their money. The students rented a space in our classroom and will need to repay the bank (with interest!) upon completion of this project. We will discuss terms such as scarcity, supply and demand and businesses being "in the red".
Reading Workshop: We wrapped up our Mystery unit and will spend this week learning about Holidays Around the World!
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
