We enjoyed shopping for our Holiday Hope family, moving into a new unit in math involving time and a fun math challenge called "Unlock the North Pole" this week. Our upcoming events involve Christmas program rehearsals and our performance and our wrapping party on Friday.
Have a wonderful week!
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- What was your favorite part of the Unlock the North Pole game?
- Can you tell me 4 examples of Text Features within non-fiction books?
- What animal are you hoping to research for your Writing project on non-fiction?
- How were you a good friend this week?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: Our new unit combines Reading, Science and Writing as we learn about animal adaptations, classification and traits. This unit is an Informational Research unit and the students will be choosing an animal to research and will be creating an informational book about their animal.
We learned about the different ways to classify animals this week as well as how animals adapt to survive. Some examples include-storing food, hibernating during the winter or shedding a winter coat of fur in the spring.
Social Studies: We learned about the role local government plays and about our representative government this past week in Social Studies.
Math: Our new unit covers telling time, elapsed time, measurement to the nearest 1/4 inch and other units of measurement. We spent the last week reviewing telling time to the nearest minute, learning the terms quarter after, half past and quarter to, as well as an introduction to elapsed time.
Reading Workshop: We learned about the text features in informational books and the importance of those features with helping us to learn. We also compared fiction and non-fiction texts.
