Math-The students are currently learning all about graphs. How to read graphs, create graphs, and answer questions about graphs is our current focus. If your child received 2 green time sheets attached to their "Homework Contract", please work on those problems at home for extra practice. These do not need to be returned by a certain date; they are simply for extra practice.
Math Intervention-This 40 minute block of time each day is our math review/practice time. The students are in small groups and rotate between stations every 2 days. The different stations are Mrs. Haagsma's group (we play math games and review concepts), Mrs. J.'s group (math practice and application), independent group (working on applying the concepts on their own), MobyMax (leveled math curriculum on the laptops), and iPads (practicing strategies using technology).
Grammar-Our focus over the next few weeks in Grammar is learning all about verbs and verb tenses. The students are learning which verb tenses are regular or irregular.
Social Studies-We are diving into a unit all about Michigan History. We began our exploration of history by a lesson from Mr. Tom and by touring Park school to look for clues about Park's past. We loved this activity! Do you know that Park still has a locker room with showers? Or that we used to have a stage in the gym? Or that there is a time capsule inside of the "1957" stone outside of the front doors? These are just a few of the interesting things we learned!
Writing-Our last Writing Celebration was on Tuesday complete with popcorn, oranges, and juice boxes for a snack. The students celebrated their hard work on our Opinion/Essay pieces. The students worked on creating 5 paragraph essays to express their opinions on topics such as sports, seasons, holidays, and school subjects. They did wonderful!
Reading-The students are on the edge of their seats each day while listening to our current Shared Reading book called Snow Treasure. This book tells the tale of children in Norway who helped transport gold during WWII. We are learning about what life was like during the war, vocabulary words, and the history of Norway. I am very impressed with the interest the students have in this topic! This book is a children's book and I am very careful to keep our conversation about WWII 3rd grade appropriate.
Thank you for your support with your 3rd grader! We are having a great new year! Please contact me with questions or concerns. [email protected]
