We had a wonderful first week of school in 2018! We began the week with a fun, challenging math activity called "Unlock the New Year", had a crazy day on Thursday with half power and wrapped up the week with our Michigan Money Store. Wow, we were busy!
Thank you for your support with helping your child with their reading and flashcards. We had every student turn in their homework this week and a record number of students pass their flashcard test. Awesome! I appreciate the time you spend helping your child and our classroom. I am thankful for you and your support!
Have a wonderful week!
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- What are the names of the chapters in your animal research book?
- Can you share your favorite part of last week?
- What is a line plot?
- What does the term "Main Idea" mean?
- What did you buy at store last week?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: We spent Writing Workshop this week drafting our Table of Contents, Introduction and one of the chapters in our Informational Research Books. This writing unit is a highlight for 3rd graders and so exciting to watch come together!
Social Studies: We continued learning about the Three Branches of Government last week. We dove deeper into the roles that they play in our communities. The students loved "taking on the role of a judge" as they interpret the laws.
Math: Our math groups focused on graphing last week, with students collecting data and creating their own pictographs. Students were then tested over their knowledge by using quiz questions created by each group based upon their graphs. We also took a quiz covering line plots and bar graphs.
Reading Workshop: We continued learning about the text features in informational books and the importance of those features with helping us to learn. Our focus for the next few weeks will be finding the Main Idea of a text. Main Idea can be defined as the most important point or purpose of the text.
MobyMax and Study Island: These are two great learning sites that Park students have access to (Thank you Parents' Club!) We spend time each week extending and practicing our skills in the subjects of Math and Reading on these sites. Computer skills are an essential part of our learning!
