Dear Parents,
We had a great first week of the NEW YEAR! We are working on reviewing routines and have begun a few new units. Enjoy some pictures of our Christmas program, wrapping party and practicing telling time!
Have a wonderful week,

Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- Can you tell me about your new read aloud-Pathki Nana? Can you summarize the book so far?
- What are the names of the three main Native American tribes that lived in Michigan?
- How many quarters are in a hour? How many minutes are each of them worth?
- What is the main idea of a text?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: We began a new unit last week called "The Art of Informational Writing". The students are currently learning how to organize their knowledge into chapters.
Math: Our new Math Unit covers Measurement. We are currently learning about time and will move into elapsed time next!
***Please encourage your child to practice memorizing their flashcards. It is essential that they have their facts memorized each week for their flashcard test on Fridays. They will have one minute to answer 20 questions so they must be fluent with their facts. Each time they past a set of facts; they will add another set. For example: the first test will cover just x5 facts, but the next test will cover Division 5s, then x5 and x 2 facts, etc...Please let me know if you have questions about our flashcards! We will finish our Friday Mad Minute tests by the end of Jan.
Social Studies: This week the students began a study of early Michigan History. We learned about the first people to live in Michigan and how they survived.
Reading Workshop: Our new Reading unit ties in with our Writing unit! All about Non-fiction! The students are encouraged to read non-fiction for at least part of our reading time in order to practice some of the skills being introduced, but they can still continue to read fiction/chapter books at home.
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
