We wrapped up our week last week with a Disney Day/Compliment Party on Friday. We played Disney Trivia, read a little about Disney, enjoyed our Disney stuffed animals and had some birthday cake! We did not get to filling out our agendas or our Mad Minute test, but we still discussed the homework expectation is the same as a usual weekend-40 mins of reading and 10 minutes of flashcards. I will test students tomorrow on their flashcards, but I will not test again until the Friday after Thanksgiving Break. Have a great week!
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- What was your favorite part of Disney Day?
- What is a norm you are working on during Math Workshop? What do you do well during Math Workshop?
- Can you sing me the 6s song? (Yankee Doodle tune)
- What is something exciting that happened this week at school?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: We continued worked on drafting our Opinion (or Personal Essay) pieces last week. This type of writing includes creating a thesis statement around a big idea and supporting it with evidence. These are traditional, five paragraph essays-
- Introduction
- First Body Paragraph
- Second Body Paragraph
- Third Body Paragraph
- Conclusion
Social Studies: We learned about the symbols of our country this week in Social Studies and the role our State Government plays in helping our communities.
Math: We jumped into learning about the Order of Operations and Two Step Word Problems in Math this week. In two step word problems, we need to be able to solve an equation in the correct order and P E M D A S helps us remember that order.
P=Parentheses
E=Exponent
M=Multiplication or
D=Division
A=Addition or
S=Subtractions
Reading Workshop: The students worked on creating quality journal entries this week in Reading Workshop. Journal entries allow the students to express their thoughts and ideas about the books that we are reading together in class. I love to read about their deeper level thinking!
Please encourage your child to remember their book every day! This is so important to help build fluency, comprehension and confidence. By reading the same book at school and home, students can greatly increase their reading skills!
