Curriculum Updates
Writing: We continued worked on drafting our Opinion (or Personal Essay) pieces last week. This type of writing includes creating a thesis statement around a big idea and supporting it with evidence. These are traditional, five paragraph essays-
- Introduction
- First Body Paragraph
- Second Body Paragraph
- Third Body Paragraph
- Conclusion
Social Studies: We were introduced to a new source of information to learn about Social Studies this week-Michigan Weekly Newspapers! The students enjoyed reading with a partner to learn about the events, history and government of Michigan.
Math: We worked on practicing our multiplication songs last week, as well as how to multiply by multiples of 10. We also really stretched our thinking with our Math Tasks this week. These are challenging math problems that have multiple ways of solving. Each day we end our Math Workshop time with a Math Task and we work with a partner to come up with an answer (or multiple answers). This is quickly becoming a favorite time to our day!
Reading Workshop: Last week we looked into the many ways in which we can learn about a character. Watching patterns in behavior, asking WHY? (a character acts the way they do) and thinking about their actions, words, and thoughts are a few of the ways in which we are learning about the main character in our book, Because of Winn-Dixie
Please encourage your child to remember their book every day! This is so important to help build fluency, comprehension and confidence. By reading the same book at school and home, students can greatly increase their reading skills!
