We started with week with a class election on Tuesday, salty snacks vs. sweet snacks! The kids were given the chance to cast their ballot in a "voting booth" in our classroom and the winner was SWEET! The students were then treated to some yummy sweet snacks on Wednesday. Please check out the School House Rock video to help your child understand the three branches of government!
Our favorite part of the week was meeting our Kinderbuddies for the first time! Every year each of my students are matched up with a Kindergartener from Mrs. DeSmit's class. The goal for the 3rd grader is to be a friend and mentor for the school year to their buddy (you may remember this if your child had Mrs. DeSmit in kindergarten). I loved seeing the excitement in the kindergarteners when we came into their room for the first time. I was so impressed with our class and the patience and kindness they displayed during this first meeting! I look forward to a great year of Kinderbuddies!
Thank you for donating extra snacks to our classroom! I really appreciate the donations (as do my students when they forget a snack) and will always accept them. We refuel at 10am and 1:35pm in our room and having a little something to eat is very important to staying focused.
Thank you,
Mrs. Haagsma

Curriculum Updates
Writing- Our new unit is called Personal Essay/Opinion. Personal Essays are based upon strong opinions and supported with evidence. The students are brainstorming ideas for their Personal Essay topics, as well as 3 reasons of support.
Math- We had a quiz this week to gauge student understanding over multiplication and division strategies and the class did wonderful! I am so proud of the progress we are making in math! Keep practicing those facts at home; having their facts memorized will make a HUGE difference in future math units over the next few years!
Science- Our next unit is called Force and Motion. This is an exciting, hands on unit covering how things move! I look forward to many fun experiments over the next few weeks!
Social Studies-We continue to work on learning the roles of both U.S. and state government. We will also dive into the goods and services provided by the government.
Reading- Our new unit in reading is called "Bringing Characters to Life". We started reading a well loved book called Because of Winn Dixie. I love the excitement so far over this book! We will focus on learning how characters develop and change.
