We will be wrapping up our first Reading, Writing and Math units this week! The students have grown so much already this year! We are working hard on our BE Theme.
Be Respectful, Be You, Be Thankful, Be Generous, Be Inspiring, Be Caring, Be Green and Be Happy. Enjoy our pictures of getting into our BE formation!
I'm looking forward to another wonderful week in 3rd grade.
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- How did your class earn a compliment party?
- What is happening in your class shared reading book-Riding Freedom?
- How did you make Mrs. Haagsma proud this week?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: This week we will pick our favorite Personal Narrative Discovery Draft and will work to revise and publish that piece. The students are very excited to create their own published books!
Math: We are wrapping up our first unit in Math this week! The students will be tested over the 0, 1,2,3,5,9 and 10 multiplication and division facts as well as word problems. The students will be expected to use any one of the strategies that they have learned over the last unit to solve these equations. Strategies such as skip counting, using the 9's trick, singing songs, drawing a picture, creating an array, or using the area model are all useful strategies when solving. Next unit will dive more in depth into multiplication and division.
***Please encourage your child to practice memorizing their flashcards. It is essential that they have their facts memorized each week for their flashcard test on Fridays. They will have one minute to answer 20 questions so they must be fluent with their facts. Each time they past a set of facts; they will add another set. For example: the first test will cover just x5 facts, but the next test will cover Division 5s, then x5 and x 2 facts, etc...Please let me know if you have questions about our flashcards!
Reading Workshop: Our first unit in Reading Workshop, called Launching the Reading Workshop, will be celebrated this week! The students learned about picking Good Fit books, working with a reading partner, how to fill out a reading log and how to read with grit!
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!

Park Families,
In our efforts to best partner with the Laurels Nursing Home, we are going to try a new start time for our annual Halloween Parade. We will leave Park at 9:20am and parade down VanBuren, through the Laurels, and back to school by coming up Curtis. Please have your child dressed (or mostly dressed) for the parade when he/she arrives at school that morning. (The Director of the ECC is aware of our morning parade plans and understands Park students may arrive for before school childcare in costume.) Please only send your child to school in school appropriate costumes (specifically, no weapons or anything that might scare little ones). The parade will be canceled if the weather does not cooperate. Classroom parties will still be in the afternoon. More information to come!
