We have a busy end of the week coming up in 3rd grade! On Thursday, we will have a variety of important guests (including principals and teachers from across the district) in our classroom to observe us in Math Workshop. I am very excited to welcome these guests into our classroom to see the wonderful learning we do each day!
Friday night is our Color Run! Shirts will be coming home this week and can be worn on Friday at school. Look for me on the course at the Color Run throwing powder!
Please check out our blog for updates and snapshots of our classroom. Have a wonderful week!
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- What is the title of your Personal Narrative Story that you chose to bring to the publishing process?
- Why is it important to make a plan before drafting your Personal Narrative?
- Can you sing the times 3 song?
- Can you show me how to solve 9x4 and 9x8 using the nine's trick in multiplication?
- What country is to the north of Michigan?
- Can you name a new state you received a postcard from this week?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: Our goal this week in Writing was to pick one Personal Narrative to bring through the drafting, editing and publishing process. We shared our stories verbally with a partner and then began creating a plan for our Personal Narratives.
Social Studies: We reviewed absolute and relative location this week in Social Studies and reviewed how to use a compass with a fun coloring activity. We will continue on with Michigan Geography for the next couple of weeks.
Math: We did an amazing job with our Math Workshop groups this week! I am so proud of the hard work put in and the Math Talk going on! Wow! ***Your child was tested on their x5 flashcards last week and if they were able to correct answer 19 or 20 in a minute; they proved their fluency and were moved on to divided by 5 this week. If your child did not pass, they will be tested again this Friday on x5. Multiplication and division flashcards will be given back to back to help students make the connection between the fact families. Please encourage your child to practice memorizing their flashcards. It is essential that they have their facts memorized each week for their flashcard test on Fridays. Each time they past a set of facts; they will add another set.
Reading Workshop: One of our goals this week in reading was to continue to work on our reading stamina and we made it up to 26 mins straight of everyone reading! Awesome! We also worked on picking good fit books and discussing how we chose books with our partners.
Please encourage your child to remember their book every day! This is so important to help build fluency, comprehension and confidence. By reading the same book at school and home, students can greatly increase their reading skills! I have noticed a number of students forgetting their books each day, this is a responsibility that each 3rd grader is expected to follow.
