Here is the BIG NEWS you've all been waiting for....Mrs. Haagsma had the baby Friday evening! Her name is Rose Catherine and she weighed 8 lbs 12 oz. Everyone is doing well!
I am excited to be working with your students these next few months. Friday was our first day together and I know we are going to have a fantastic time learning, as well as having fun getting to know each other better. We are hoping for a reprieve from this winter weather so we can have some consistency in our learning the next few weeks.
Have a wonderful week,
Mrs. Davis
Questions to ask your child about 3rd grade this week
- How did the voyageurs contribute to the fur trade?
- Why were beaver pelts so valuable to the Europeans?
- A family went to a movie ended at 6:15. If the movie was 2 hours long and it took 20 minutes to drive to the movie theater, what time did the family leave home?
- What is your topic for your informational writing?
Curriculum Updates
Writing: We are continuing our unit called "The Art of Informational Writing" is extending our knowledge of writing informational texts. The students are currently working to finish drafting their boxes and bullets for each chapter.
Math: We are continuing to work on Unit 3 with a focus on graphs and solving word problems based on the data. We will also learn about measurement this week with a goal to complete this unit.
***Please encourage your child to practice memorizing their flashcards. Repeated practice helps with both accuracy and speed.
Social Studies: We learned about the European settlers in Michigan and how they impacted the fur trade with the Native Americans. We enjoyed reading Voyageurs Paddle together.
Reading Workshop: Our Reading unit ties in with our Writing unit! All about Non-fiction! The students are encouraged to read non-fiction for at least part of our reading time in order to practice some of the skills being introduced, but they can still continue to read fiction/chapter books at home.
*Please encourage your child to read one book at school and at home. It is important that they take the same book back and forth from school to home each day. We want to work on building comprehension by reading a book all the way through before starting another one!
